Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is an advanced therapeutic technique we are trained in. IASTM is designed to treat soft tissue dysfunction, including muscle, tendon, and fascial restrictions. This treatment uses specialized tools, typically made from stainless steel, that are crafted with bevelled edges and varied contours to effectively address different areas of the body. The tools are gently applied to the skin, using precise strokes to target the affected tissue.

The primary goal of IASTM is to create controlled microtrauma within the soft tissue, which stimulates the body’s natural healing process. This microtrauma encourages increased blood flow to the area, delivering oxygen and vital nutrients to promote healing while also flushing out waste products and toxins. By enhancing circulation and facilitating tissue repair, IASTM can help break down adhesions, scar tissue, and fascial restrictions that may be causing pain, stiffness, or decreased mobility.

IASTM can be an effective treatment for a wide range of soft tissue issues, including:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Relieves tightness and pressure on the median nerve in the wrist.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: Helps alleviate heel pain and tension in the plantar fascia.
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinitis: Reduces inflammation and improves mobility in the shoulder.
  • Heel Pain/Achilles Tendinitis: Eases discomfort and promotes healing in the Achilles tendon.
  • DeQuervain’s Syndrome: Targets inflammation in the wrist, improving movement and reducing pain.
  • Scar Tissue: Breaks down scar tissue from injuries or surgeries, improving range of motion.
  • IT Band Syndrome: Helps relieve tension and discomfort in the iliotibial band, improving leg mobility.
  • Ligament Sprains: Encourages healing by improving circulation to the injured ligaments.
  • Trigger Finger: Alleviates stiffness and tightness in the tendons of the fingers.
  • Shin Splints: Eases pain and stiffness in the lower leg, improving mobility.
  • Muscle Trigger Points: Reduces muscle knots and tightness, improving overall flexibility.
  • Golfer’s Elbow: Relieves pain and tension in the elbow and forearm muscles.

This technique can help address both chronic and acute soft tissue issues, restoring function and promoting healing in a non-invasive way. IASTM is typically used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, which may include stretches, strengthening exercises, and other manual therapies to maximize recovery and improve long-term outcomes. Whether you’re dealing with a specific injury or chronic pain, IASTM can help you regain mobility, reduce discomfort, and get back to your daily activities with greater ease.
